Random Fortean Mag of the Day: Fortean Times, May 1999

FT May 1999
pg 39 FT

I have about ten of those plastic magazine holders full of Fortean Times, UFO Magazine, Nexus, Fate, Strange, and other esoteric mags. A huge job going through the "room of doom" full of books and materials, all related to UFOs and general Fortean subjects. Here's a random issue I pulled: Fortean Times, May 1999. Next job: organizing all those issues! Or, and, I might start selling them off; haven't decided on that yet. In the meantime, it's been fun looking through them.

One of the articles in the May 1999 issue was Loving the Alien by Nigel Watson, artwork by Fabrice Parme, Alex Howe. The lead-in to the piece:

"UFOs were once thought to be probing our planet with a view to invasion and colonisation. Today's UFO occupants are more likely to be probing our bodies and minds. Nigel Watson doesn't think much of their chat-up lines but marvels at Their pulling power."

Slide Show Book Review: UFOs in Wartime

My first YouTube venture; Cafe Esoterica's Slide Show Book Review of Mack Maloney's UFOs in Wartime.

Didn't know what I was doing, had to convert the Keynote to Quick Time for it to load to YouTube, timing of slides went all glitchy, but overall, I think it's okay. Next one will be better!

General Zod & the Ashtar Command | TDG - Science, Magick, Myth and History

From Red Pill Junkie at The Daily Grail:General Zod & the Ashtar Command | TDG - Science, Magick, Myth and History. With video clips.
"To any seasoned UFO buff, this should immediately you of the infamous Vrillon transmission, broadcast on the Hannington transmitter of Southern Television in the United Kingdom for six minutes at 5:10 PM on Saturday November 26, 1977. Vrillon claimed to be a representative of the Ashtar Command, and his message is consistent with the typical 'space-brotherly' tone of peace & a call to disarmament.

Although many people consider it to be nothing but a hoax, to this day the identity of the perpetrator —who at that would have needed considerable technical expertise to hijack the signal of a TV station— has never been discovered." ~ rpj, The Daily Grail

New Facebook pic

I changed my Facebook profile picture the other night to this:

I thought it a perfect image to represent me. Love its retro look and the time era fits, and the U.F.O. book in her hand, what could be better? No idea though about the photo's history. Thanks to UFO cinema expert Robbie Graham of Silver Screen Saucers,  who commented on FB that the image is from "...the 'Steve Canyon' TV show (1959), Episode 'Project UFO', which was censored by the Air Force." I need to know more about that! Googling this I came across some very interesting links. YouTube doesn't have much on this specific episode, but I did find this:

Shepherd Johnson also left a comment about the woman in the photo. She is Julie Adams, "...who starred in 'Creature from the Black Lagoon'" one of my favorite monster movies, a classic of course, from 1954 -- the year I was born.

Nick Redfern's 'Faking a Flying Saucer Crash'

Intriguing UFO history item, on a book written in 1948 about a crashed flying saucer. The author, Bernard Newman, also wrote books on "...more than a hundred books on subjects including real-life espionage, global politics and current affairs."
Faking a Flying Saucer Crash | Mysterious Universe: Of one thing, however, we can be certain: less than a year after the events at Roswell, an author who had numerous, high-level, official connections and who had written extensively on espionage issues, wrote a sci-fi novel that specifically linked the worlds of crashed UFOs, faked alien autopsies, and bogus flying saucer tales promoted by military officials. (Redfern, Mysterious Universe)
Which is pretty interesting, don't you think?

Pilot Recalls Seeing Discs

From The Oregonian, July 9, 1947. Follow link in article for full article. h/t to Paranormal News for link:
Pilot Recalls Seeing Discs - Paranormal News -- Your Source for UFO and Paranormal Related Information: Rankin, who is recovering from an old back injury received in an automobile accident came to Portland over the weekend to spend the summer. He saw the 'silver saucers' over Bakersfield, California, June 23, while lying on the lawn sunbathing, he told the Oregonian.

"I hesitated to say much about them," Rankin said, "Until I noticed all the Hullaballoo in the papers. I puzzled over their strange shape for awhile and finally concluded that they were the Navy's new XFSU-1 flying flapjacks, which are thin and round, with twin propellers and glubby tail.

Only One XFSU-1 Built

The navy and manufacturer have announced officially that only one such machine was built and that it never left Connecticut.

The Ectoplasmic Flying Saucer | Interesting Articles, Links and Other Media

Fascinating, this blog post about medium Alec Harris, and meetings with flying saucer people during a session. The following words from the other world visitor sounds typical of messages received by contactees of that era. (An observation, not a judgement on the validity, or non, of such encounters.)
The Ectoplasmic Flying Saucer | Interesting Articles, Links and Other Media: A tall Spirit materialised wearing a mask which covered his whole face leaving only his eyes visible. This figure approached Hyman and taking him by the hand led him to the cabinet. Then in a serious voice he said: "I want to tell you that flying saucers do exist, although your world is sceptical of any reports of such. But I say to you that they will one day be an established fact, and will arrive on your planet before man destroys himself; but the time is not yet ripe."

And, as with many of these types of encounters (including Mothman, etc.) pre-knowledge of events concerning the witness is had by the non-human entities.

(There was another South African contactee: Elizabeth Klarer, who lived on the planet Meton with Space Brother Akon and had a child together.)

John Galliano Outfit Shocks Jewish Community | Style Crush - Yahoo! Shine

John Galliano Outfit Shocks Jewish Community | Style Crush - Yahoo! Shine: Other than his attendance at Kate Moss' 2011 wedding and a stint in rehab for alcoholism, we haven't seen or heard much of him since the scandal. But on Tuesday night, Galliano was photographed leaving a building in New York dressed as a Hasidic Jewish man—long jacket, hat, and curly side locks—on his way to Oscar de la Renta's Fashion Week show for which he collaborated on. And according to the New York Post, Jewish community leaders were offended.

"...and a stint in rehab for alcoholism..." ya think?

From UFO Digest: 'UFOs The True Story of Flying Saucers 1956'

UFOs The True Story of Flying Saucers 1956: UFOs The True Story of Flying Saucers 1956
Dirk Vander Ploeg's picture
By Dirk Vander Ploeg - 1 month 2 weeks ago

Suggested by Brad Steiger

Enjoy this drama-documentary, based on the experiences of Al Chop, a reporter who served as press liaison for the Pentagon during its investigation of UFO's from 1947 to the early 1950s.

Miller, Soule, and Tremayne provide the voices for the narrated portions of the film. Although the movie contains only two brief film clips to serve as photographic evidence of UFO's, the producers build a good case based on the credibility of certain UFO witnesses (airline pilots, military personnel, radar operators, etc.).

On a more subtle level, director Winston Jones pulls off a clever trick; he begins the film as a pure documentary, but he gradually modifies this approach and focuses on reporter Al Chop's personal involvement in the UFO investigation. Chop slowly changes from UFO skeptic to UFO believer

Branson Balloon Hoax

Idly looking through UFO: The Continuing Enigma, published by Reader's Digest, 1991. Among the contributors in this volume: Peter Brookesmith, Hilary Evans, Jenny Randles, John Rimmer, Dennis Stacy.

Page 55: Physical Fakes:

April Fool's Flying Saucer
"Early morning commuters driving on a freeway outside London, England, on March 30, 1989, soon after 5:00 a.m. could scarcely believe their eyes. Hovering above them was a glowing spacecraft. Extraterrestrials were also visible aboard the craft. Soon the police were inundated with calls from people saying what they sad seen.

This alien visitation proved no more sinister than British entrepreneur, and keen balloonist, Richard Branson, rehearsing a stunt for an April Fool's Day prank. The spacecraft was a saucer-shaped hot air balloon, 100 feet wide, complete withflahsing lights. The "aliens" were Branson and two co-pilots dressed as Martians."
